One Way to Beat Depression
by Vincent of Walleyes Unlimted
I was watching an educational program the other day and they made a claim that both men and women from every culture around the world suffer from depression in their forties. Women usually are affected near 40, while men are victims at around 46. They revealed graphs that indicated that the forties are the most unhappy period of one's life. The graph revealed that the happiest periods of one's life are at the beginning and near the end.
Thirty-one years ago my Dad went through a period of deep depression. This was odd since he was usually more upbeat. He had recently gone through a divorce and therefore, some pretty dramatic life changes. I remember asking him why he was so depressed. He simply stated that he finally realized that he was not going to accomplish many of his lifelong dreams and goals. I was 21 at the time and this had a profound effect on my life. I vowed not to let this happen to me.
I think that religion has a role to play in one's well-being. For me, it is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself. It is amazing how many problems are rectified with this philosophy of life.
Confucius said,"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Surveys reveal that most people are unhappy with their occupation. My advice to you would be to go to extremes to make a change. Life is indeed too short. I own a small service business and I am delighted to serve my customers every day.
The best way to counter depression is to have a hobby or outlet of some type. For me, it is fishing. At he end of March, the club that I belong to is going to the Mississippi River. We will target walleye and sauger. In May we go to Door County for smallmouth bass, pike, and walleye. The summer is taken up with local outings and one Canadian trip for muskies. In October we head back to Door County for trophy smallmouth bass. We finish up the year with trips to the UP of Michigan and Canada for trophy walleyes. Each outing is an adventure. They are filled with camaraderie, challenge, fresh air, and exercise. There is nothing like being on the water.
