Online Fishing Newsletters

ILFishing.com signed up for more than 20 fishing newsletters available online at the beginning of November in an effort to discover the quality of fishing information that can be accessed by simply opening the inbox of your email account.

These newsletters must be signed up for individually. Some require you to click a link in a confirming email or reply to a confirming email prior to receiving the newsletter. We have noted this for each newsletter listed. It is also noted if additional information is required to sign up other than just your name and email address.

Newsletters are emailed to you weekly, monthly, or intermittently. We have noted the number of emails received during November and December for each listing.

All online newsletters, fishing or otherwise, usually contain advertisements and promotions. It appears to hold true that, the more commercial the content of a newsletter, the more often you receive emails from them. Conversely, the ones that contain less promotion and more fishing information seem to email less often.

The newsletters listed below contain ads, but we have weeded-out ones that exclusively contain promotions and no actual fishing information. For those always looking for a bargain we have included newsletters, noted as such, that offer discounts and rebates on various fishing products rather than fishing information.

You can decide what your level of tolerance is for advertising and frequency of emails. The information listed below is simply our honest opinion concerning those newsletters that we feel offer some value. We have no business relationships with any of these newsletters nor do we receive any compensation.

1. Big Fish Tackle.com (Predatorial Advertising Assoc. LLC)- We received seven emails during two months. Additional information is required, in the form of personal preferences, to sign up for this newsletter. You will get a confirming email after signing up and are required to reply to the email to verify that you want the newsletter emailed to you.

You can sign up at: Big Fish Tackle.com  Click on the "Sign Up for our mailing list" link in the left column.

There is a little something here for everyone. There are links to fishing message boards, “fishing funnies” cartoons, a featured fishing web site, reader-submitted photos, and product reviews. The first issue's “featured article” was about fishing for Halibut off the California coast.

This newsletter is a bit commercial and there is only one featured article per issue, but there are still plenty of articles in their archives to keep you reading about fishing rather than reading advertisements.

There are also tackle giveaways offered. One issue was only an advertisement for fishing products- lures, make-your-own lure kits, and fishing T-shirts.

One issue contained a repeated feature article from a few weeks prior, as well as a repeated featured web site. There are too many web sites and articles available online to send repeats, so the value of this newsletter is lessened if this happens regularly.

Overall, this newsletter may appeal to those interested in a variety of general fishing information.

2. Bass Resource.com- We received two issues during two months. You will get a confirming email after signing up.

You can sign up at: Bass Resource.com   Click on the "Sign up now" link under the word "Newsletter" in the green box on the right side.

This newsletter is a series of links to articles that are all located on their web site, BassResource.com, so visiting the site will enable you to access the same information.

However, the links in the newsletter are conveniently organized into the following categories: general bass fishing; tournament tips; seasonal articles; tips arranged by bait, techniques, or equipment; articles for women; bass fishing industry news; boating etiquette, tips, and safety; bass biology, and behavior; product reviews; and a photo gallery.

There are also links to their online store, site search feature, and their fishing forums (which did not work).

The organization makes it easier to find specific information, but many of the articles are not dated so you can't be sure how long they have been online or where else they are available.

The second issue was the same format with links to new articles. If you are looking for bass fishing information, this one may be worth a try.

3. Midcurrent Fly Fishing News- We received nine issues during two months. You will get a confirming email after signing up that will contain a link that you are required to click to verify that you want the newsletter emailed to you. You can select your specific area of fly fishing interest when signing up for this newsletter.

You can sign up at: MidCurrent.com   Click on the word "Newsletter" in the left-hand column.

This was the finest newsletter that we received. It is professionally done with readable type and sharp graphics. It has an impressive spectrum of information about every aspect of fly fishing.

There are human interest, how-to, and travel articles, as well as book and DVD reviews. News about fly fishing, book excerpts, and an article by a tournament-winning lady angler added spice and balance.

There are seasonal articles about winter fishing, basic technique stories, and great graphics on fly tying and casting techniques. One issue had a saltwater emphasis, but there's plenty here for every fly fishing enthusiast.

If you like fly fishing, don't miss this one.

4. Make Your Own Bait.com- We received two issues during two months. You will get a confirming email after signing up that will contain a link that you are required to click to verify that you want the newsletter emailed to you.

You can sign up at: Make Your Own Fish Bait.com   Scroll down the page and fill in your email address inside the box where it says "Join Now."

This is a newsletter about making fish bait, mostly for catfish and carp fishing.

The first issue had tips and recipes from Africa for making carp baits. It was unique and informative.

The second issue had a recipe for catfish bait and provided online sources for books and making your own lures. It also contained fishing jokes and quotations.

This is a no-frills, interesting newsletter, without a lot of promotional stuff to wade through.

5. Tackle Direct.com- We received seven emails during two months. You will get a confirming email after signing up that will contain a link that you are required to click a link to verify that you want the newsletter emailed to you.

You can sign up at: Tackle Direct.com   Fill in the box where it says "Enter your email" and click the "sign up" button to the right.

Don't sign up for this newsletter if you are only looking for fishing information.

This newsletter consists of ads for fishing accessories and various outdoor products, including fishermen's pliers, reels, books, videos, and travel mugs.

Some items are available for free when you purchase something else or enter a contest. Some items come with rebate offers.

One email contained a $5 coupon good on any Tackle Direct order until 1/31/06 and one contained a $15 coupon good on any order of $200 or more, with no expiration date.

This newsletter may be of interest to those interested in looking for a bargain, but it contains no fishing information.

We would like to hear about any quality online fishing newsletters that ILFishing.com readers enjoy so that we may include them in future articles. Email any such information to: feedback@ilfishing.com .
